Benefits of professional dental cleaning
Plaque removal: Tartar (also referred to as calculus) and plaque buildup, both above and below the gum line, can result in serious periodontal problems. A professional dental cleaning removes hardened plaque and tartar.
Fresher breath: Bad breath (or halitosis) is generally indicative of advancing periodontal disease. Professional dental cleaning removes plaque, calculus, and bacteria, and reduces halitosis.
A healthier looking smile: Stained and yellowed teeth dramatically decrease the esthetics of a smile. Professional dental cleaning is an effective treatment in ridding the teeth of these unsightly stains.

Steps involved in teeth cleaning
Although many people are fearful of teeth cleanings, it is a simple and painless process. Following are the typical steps involved in teeth cleaning.
Physical exam of the mouth. Before the cleaning process begins, a dental hygienist or a dentist will perform a physical exam of the entire mouth. During this process, a small mirror, explorer, and periodontal probe are used to check around teeth and pocket depths of gums for signs of inflammation (gingivitis) and bleeding (periodontitis) or other potential problems.
Removal of plaque and tartar (scaling). By using a small mirror to guide, the dentist or dental hygienist uses a scaler to scrape off plaque and tartar around the gum line, and in between the teeth. If the amount of plaque is minimal, a manual scaler will be used to remove tartar deposits by simply scraping them off. If a large amount of tartar is present, the dentist will use an ultrasonic scaler that removes tartar with a gentle vibration.
Polishing of the teeth. During this step, the dentist or hygienist uses an abrasive polishing compound to polish the teeth. Polishing makes it difficult for plaque to accumulate due the teeth’s new smooth texture. Polishing also gives the teeth a shiny, clean look and removes any surface stains.
Fluoride treatment. After scaling and polishing the teeth, the dentist will apply a small amount of fluoride as a protectant to prevent cavities. Fluoride treatment helps to strengthen the enamel (outermost layer of the teeth), which is crucial in preventing tooth decay.
